Day 183

OK scrolling though our options to watch on TV tonight I came across this.....

Can I just say....at the risk of sounding cliche....they don't make shows like this anymore. I loved this show growing up. Jerry walked through the living room and immediately was able to sing along with "it's a beautiful day in the neighborhood" after 30+ y ears. My kids were immediately under Mr. Rogers' spell, as was I.

He did such a wonderful job teaching children to love themselves and love others, and the importance of acceptance. Here is something neat I remember reading about and I found this to refresh my memory.....

Mister Rogers' Neighborhood won four Emmy awards, and Rogers received one for lifetime achievement.
During the 1997 Daytime Emmys, the Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Rogers. The following is an excerpt from Esquire's coverage of the gala, written by Tom Junod:
Mister Rogers went onstage to accept the award — and there, in front of all the soap opera stars and talk show sinceratrons, in front of all the jutting man-tanned jaws and jutting saltwater bosoms, he made his small bow and said into the microphone, "All of us have special ones who have loved us into being. Would you just take, along with me, ten seconds to think of the people who have helped you become who you are. Ten seconds of silence."
And then he lifted his wrist, looked at the audience, looked at his watch, and said, "I'll watch the time." There was, at first, a small whoop from the crowd, a giddy, strangled hiccup of laughter, as people realized that he wasn't kidding, that Mister Rogers was not some convenient eunuch, but rather a man, an authority figure who actually expected them to do what he asked. And so they did. One second, two seconds, three seconds — and now the jaws clenched, and the bosoms heaved, and the mascara ran, and the tears fell upon the beglittered gathering like rain leaking down a crystal chandelier. And Mister Rogers finally looked up from his watch and said softly "May God be with you," to all his vanquished children.
I think I will make this part of our nightly tv routine  :)

Day 182

Jack was tired from swimming with Aunt Meredith and Uncle Games...so tired, that he fell asleep mid snack on the way home. Yes, his whole arm is in the bag of goldfish....

Day 181

It always amazes me to see the differences between my kiddos -or the differences between girls and boys- when they were created by the same gene pool, raised the same way, exposed to the same things, etc. We don't watch violent things on tv--like I've mentioned before, I try to screen what my kids watch heavily. Yet, when we pass the superhero toy display or a toy laser shooter, Jack is drawn like  a a moth to a flame.  We do not own a gun, we don't hunt or play violent video games- or video games at all-yet Jack knows what to do with a toy gun and goes into aggressive noises and faces.  Is that just innate?  I guess Elizabeth is the same way with the "pink isle" at target---but that just seems more normal to me for some reason. Yesterday, flipping through channels we passed the Avengers cartoon TV show and Jack went into total excitement and ran to his bedroom returning with his laser shooter. (which I was against buying, for the record-but gave in since it was Buzz Lightyear) WHAT??? I asked why he needed that and his reply: "to get the bad guys"  REALLY?  What bad guys do you know about?  and you feel the need to shoot them?  there are no shooting of bad guys on the Wiggles or Curious George. Where is he getting that? Is he going to go back to Kingwood and get expelled for putting some moves on his 3 year old friends? Is this normal? AGH!   I didn't even know who the "avengers" were until I watched it....of course, telling Jerry about it-he was proud and excited that maybe he can pretend to be 6 again and start buying superhero toys. Maybe this was just a genetic code that WAS passed down!

Here he is 'getting those bad guys'

Day 179

Since I've done a sunset post...here is the sunrise (ish) from the next day...It was as close as I could get without the ugly condos in the way....

Day 178

Tuesday, Jack and I drove down to meet E and my parents at the beach.  That evening, we took a trip to a little pier and playground on Wolf Bay in Orange Beach.  It was a gorgeous sunset and I think they had just as much fun playing on the shore there as they did on the beach shore by the condo.

Here are some of the pics from the evening......
The colors are my favorite in this one

this was about 5 min before the one above...the sky is much lighter

Jack and "Pranka"  (aka Grandpa aka my dad) He was attached at the hip to Pranka while we were there....everything he said was preceded with "hey Pranka..."

Day 177

Today was Jack's last day of being an only child. I didn't send him to school today -even though I had to pay for the whole week, and today was probably the only day he could go. And the reason I didn't send him is because I swear I cannot get enough of this boy.  He is so mommy-fied and I am so Jackie-fied it is not even funny. I don't know if it's because he has changed so much lately, or if it's because E is gone, or what my problem is....but JEEZ I can hardly stand for him to be outta my sight. He has been sweet, well behaved, silly, hilarious and talking my arm off NON stop. If I could freeze time right now with my kids, I would. And if Jerry rolls over in the night and I'm gone...it's because I've snuck into the twin bed down the hall.

We played hard at the park tonight until the sun went down. He was dirty, sweaty, happy and exhausted.....

Day 176

ok so don't ask how I got to #176. I **think** that is the # I am supposed to be on, including the days that I have missed along the way. I'm too lazy to go back and count the days. I had a small change in plans today, when I got a call that my grandma had fallen and needed to go get checked out at the ER. Thankfully, all is A-OK and she is back at home with a good report from the Dr. While I was gone all afternoon, the boys had some male bonding time...complete with a purchase of an Air Hog Rocket Blaster. Jack thought it was awesome, even when his little foot could only make it shoot up in the air about 3 feet.

oh, and he also got a bucket stuck on his head---no more ER trips today, please

Days 169+

Yes...I am almost a whole weekend behind on the photoblog!  I was close to just stopping altogether, because I hate stressing about if I've taken any pics, remembering to post them---I have nothing creative to say or show, blah blah blah.  This is supposed to be fun not stressful!  But...I guess a few days late, or a few days off is better than none.
Elizabeth left with my parents for the beach on Friday, so Jack has been an only child since then, and he is loving it. He didn't even ask about her until this morning!  We've been busy all weekend, so here is a photo re-cap!
On Friday, Jack and I took a walk through this cute little neighborhood along the creek

We found a shallow spot later that Jack decided to do a little more than put his feet in...
On Saturday morning we had a fun b'day party at Chuck-E-Cheese.  Jack had so much fun!
Then later that night, we went with Rachel and her family to her mom's pool to swim

We are headed to visit our friends Katie, Maggie and Lucy tonight then over to the beach after that to join E and Nana and Grandpa.  It will probably be phone pics for a while on the blog unless I can upload at the condo...which is doubtful!

Day 168

OK!  As promised.....a short little video clip of Elizabeth at swimming lessons. I am so so so so so proud of her!  Her progress this week has been phenomenal and I wish we could have another week of lessons, because she would be swimming laps!  (ok maybe not laps but still) If you have ever been with E at a pool...you know that she a) doesn't get off the steps unless she has the death grip on someone even with water wings or a float and b) would not put her face in the water. She acts like the water in the bathtub is acid when washing her hair/face.  This is so exciting!  Her beach trip next week will consist of lots of time in the pool! Thank you Ms Wendy!  We love you!

Day 167

Today is the official 1st day of summer... and Sonic has 1/2 price milkshakes all day! Woohoo!

Day 166

E is taking swimming lessons this week.  We tried last year too, but were not very successful.  She just wasn't ready yet. Thankfully, that miracle called Kindergarten has her ready to try anything!  Hopefully by the end of the week I will have an awesome video to post!  And by awesome, I mean seeing her not crying on the top step with floaties on.

Day 165

This is kind of a random thing to post or take a picture of...but I wanted to share a picture of Jack's new favorite toys:  disposable cups and utensils! I don't know why he loves to play with these so much, but it entertains him for a loooong time!  He always has the same routine of play too...lay them out in a line, count them, make sure there are enough utensils for 1:1 with a cup, recount.  Next stack them all up, unstack them into groups of 2 (make sure there are still 10) and build bridges with the utensils to cups....then act confused because a bridge takes up 2 cups and leaves leftover utensils. ha!

Here he is mid-bridge making....with a really cute farmer's tan

Day 164

Jack had an awesome time at a birthday party at Gymboree Saturday. He was in rare form and I got the "he's all boy isn't he" comment on 3 different occasions. I think that is code for "get some control of that wild animal please" or "did you feed him chocolate and mountain dew in the car on the way over?"  It didn't help that he was the only boy in attendance except for a baby....He is one of the split seconds I was able to capture him a) semi still and b) semi looking at the camera

Day 163

Happy Father's Day!
Here are a few of my favorite pics over the years of Jerry and the kidlets.
They love their dada, and so do I :)

Day 162

This is a screenshot of my wakeup time by Mr. Jackson Ford Smith. I've really gotta get some blackout curtains in his room... Because he is up at first light every day---no matter how late he stays up (which was almost an hour and a half past his bedtime last night!) Someone tell me he will learn to sleep in...or I'm going to need a Starbucks delivery option.

Day 161

We stopped by the fire station today to get the kids' cars seats installed. I recently had both car seats out and couldn't get them back in as tight as I wanted to, plus I like knowing that they are installed by someone trained to do so!   The kids had fun getting an up close look at the trucks and equipment and I admit, I enjoyed looking at the firemen equipment too! And this might sound like kind of a public service announcement.... but ya'll.... please make sure your car seats are installed correctly...and that you are using the safest choices for your kids in regards to seats. Something crazy like 80% of child restraints are used incorrectly, and over 1/3 of children ride in the unsafest kind of seat for their age/size. Many fire stations (almost all stations in Alabaster) have car seat installation trained firemen and are happy to do it. It took all of 10 minutes, literally ;)

ready to ride!

Day 160

We had an exciting morning! At my parents' house there is a live trap set to try and catch a nasty opposum that has decided to take residence under their porch/crawlspace. When we went to feed Bailey last night we noticed a baby had been caught... So this morning we happened to be at the house when Critter Control came to pick up the baby and we got to have a short lesson on opposums! He was so nice and wonderful- got the baby out and showed them how he 'plays possum', how he uses his tail to hang, etc. Then he told us where the baby will go until it's big enough to be released and survive on its own.

Day 159

This afternoon Rachel and the kids and I made a field trip to the Gardendale Splash Pad.  Last year, it was a total FAIL so I was hesitant to go again...but thankfully my kids have gotten brave (finally) and had lots of fun getting wet!
the was Jack's favorite thing to do...b/c he could play with the water without actually getting wet

love Clark's face in this one!

silly E....with an awesome bruise on her arm!  She is covered in them!
